National and WA Division position

NTEU elections are coming up and it’s your chance to participate in the democratic life of our union.

Whether you are professional staff or an academic, no matter how you are employed or how many hours you work, your insight and experiences are essential to shaping the future of our union and our sector.

Below is a breakdown of available positions.


Branch offices:

- Branch President: Leader at the branch level, works with WA Division staff to support members, coordinate campaigns, chair meetings and issue public statements on behalf of the branch
- Branch Secretary: Manager of branch business, including Committee Meeting schedules, agendas and minutes, various correspondence and record-keeping
- Branch Vice Presidents: (1x Academic Staff and 1x General Staff): Ensures the interests of both major staff cohorts are considered in all branch decisions, and may act as President while they are absent
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Representative: A dedicated Committee role representing the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members at each branch
- Casual Staff Representative: A dedicated committee role representing the interests of Casual staff members at each branch
- Ordinary Committee Members (9): Representatives from all areas of the branch who form the rank and file of the Branch Committee. National Councillors (1x General staff, 1x Academic staff, 1x non-specific): Represent the Branch at NTEU WA Division and National Council meetings.

WA Division Offices:
- Division Assistant Secretaries (1x Academic and 1x General Staff): Non-salaried officers that assist with the general running of the Division, directly Elected from the full WA Division membership
- Division Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Representative: Dedicated Division Office representing the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members

The WA Division Secretary is a Salaried 4-year term and is not up for election this year. The WA Division President and Vice President are elected via collegiate election from and by the membership of the Division Council at the commencement of each 2-year term.


National offices:

(4 year terms)
- General Secretary: Manages Union Business, accountable for staffing, finance, and industrial strategy and policy.
- National President: The spokesperson for the Union, accountable for organising and campaigns, public policy and lobbying
- National Assistant Secretary: The great plate-spinner. Assists both National President and General Secretary with the running of the union, typically across every function and portfolio.
- National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Representative (3): Members of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander caucus, which work to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters remain forefront within the Union.

The National Executive and Vice Presidents are Elected by the body of the National Council via collegiate election during the October National Council Meeting in each even year.

General Election Info: Most terms commence on October 16th on election years, and end on the same date in 2 or 4 years time. National Council terms end/commence 4 weeks before the date set for the national Council Meeting on even years .
